Excursion Day

Welcome to the Monday Excursion options.

Please note excursions are subject to minimum number requirements and weather conditions.   Some excursions are now full.  

All Excursions depart from the SkyCity Hotel.  Most excursions will return back to the SkyCity Hotel only.  Please note a few excursions allow participants to make their own way back to their accommodaiton.

Most Excursions require casual clothing - please check the requirements for your choosen Excursion.  Auckland has a maritime climate and can have four seasons in one day!

APAA Golf Tournament (E1)

 

Timings:  7:00 am - 5:00 pm
Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer
Includes:  Transfers via coach, cart hire, prizes, food around the course and with drinks/snacks at prize giving.

Surcharge:  NZ$120.00 plus $50 for golf club hire
Description and requirements:  

For Men:  Please wear a shirt with collar, golf shorts or slacks, golf shoes (soft spike) with socks.

For Women:  Please wear a shirt with collar, shorts, slacks, or skirt, golf shoes (soft spike) with socks.

Gulf Harbour Country Club does not permit metal spikes on the course. 

The APAA17 Golf Tournament will take place at the Gulf Harbour Country Club located north of Auckland on the Whangaparoa Peninsula, affording beautiful sea views of the Hauraki Gulf.

The 18 Hole Robert Trent Jones JR Championship course opened in 1997 and is one of New Zealand’s top courses.

Gulf Harbour Country Club hosted the 1998 World Cup of golf which saw many international stars such as Nick Faldo and John Daly take on the challenge of the course.

Ruakuri Cave Excursion (E2) - EXCURSION FULL

Timings:  7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfers, admission, guided tour of Ruakuri Cave, lunch, tea or coffee with lunch, bottled water

Description and requirements:  An easy walk with no steps.  Please wear casual clothes and good walking shoes.  A jumper or jacket is recommended.

Drive through rural Waikato to Waitomo where delegates will participate in a magical 2 hour Ruakuri Cave experience. Ruakuri Cave is New Zealand's longest guided underground walking tour. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, marvel at limestone that flows into delicate shawl-like formations, listen to the echo of waterfalls, and see the shimmering lights of thousands of tiny glow worms. 

Following the tour you will stop for lunch at a local country cafe, where all of the delicious food on offer is cooked on site.  

Black Labyrinth Adventure Excursion (E3, E6, E16) - EXCURSION FULL

Includes:  Transfers, tour guide, Black Labyrinth tour, snack food, lunch at Black Labyrinth HQ, bottled water.

Description and requirements:  Please wear casual clothes and bring your own swimwear and a towel. Wetsuits and footwear will be provided, the water temperature will be about 10C to 14C. Participants need to be over the age of 12 and over 45kg in weight.  A warm jumper or jacket is suggested to wear after the tour.

This is the original Waitomo subterranean adventure that will have you climbing, black water tubing and leaping through Ruakuri Cave. Over 3 hours you will take leaps of faith over cascading waterfalls and float serenely down an underground river as you enjoy the glow worm show on the vaulted limestone galleries above you. Your journey concludes when you emerge into the sunlight of the Waitomo forest.    

Hobbiton Excursion (E4, E5, E11, E14, E15)

Description and requirements:  An easy walk.  There are some flat areas, steps and sloping pathways during the walk. Please wear casual clothes and good walking shoes.  A light rainjacket is also recommended.

Drive from Auckland through middle-earth to the Hobbiton Movie Set from "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films for a fascinating guided tour. This location is the largest green set in the world. You will see 44 hobbit holes including Bilbo's house, Bag End, the Mill and double arch bridge, and the Party Tree. At this stunning location you can take a photo at the door of Bag End, looking out over the whole of Hobbiton to the hills in the distance. The guided tour concludes with a visit to the Green Dragon Inn where you will enjoy a complimentary ale, cider or ginger beer and lunch in the marquee alongside the Inn. 

Waiheke Island Excursion A (E7)

Timings:  8:15 am - 5:45 pm

Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfer from hotel to Auckland ferry terminal and return transfer, round trip ferry tickets, transport and guide on Waiheke Island, lunch with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, olive oil tasting, wine tasting, bottled water.

Description and requirements:  An easy walk with some flat areas, some steps and some sloping pathways. Please wear casual clothes and good walking shoes.  A light rainjacket is also recommended.

When Aucklanders' talk of an island paradise they are referring to Waiheke Island, which is 35 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland and is home to over 30 wineries, along with olive groves and dozens of local and internationally renowned artists. Your tour will start with a visit to stunning Onetangi Beach, followed by a visit to some local artists and crafts people and free time in Oneroa village. You will then travel to Rangihoua Estate and enjoy an olive oil presentation followed by olive oil tasting, before continuing on to Goldie Estate Vineyard to enjoy a wine tasting, a presentation on the unique history of this winery and a delicious buffet lunch at the Vineyard.

Waiheke Island Excursion B, including the EcoZip (E8) - EXCURSION FULL

Timings:  8:15 am - 5:45 pm

Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfer from hotel to Auckland ferry terminal and return transfer, round trip ferry tickets, transport and guide on Waiheke Island, EcoZip adventure, lunch with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, wine tasting, bottled water. 

Description and requirements:  An easy walk with some flat areas, some steps and some sloping pathways. Please wear casual clothes, trousers or shorts for the Zip Line and good walking shoes. All participants must weigh between 30kg and 125kg.  A light rainjacket is also recommended.

 

Your tour will start with a visit to EcoZip Adventures, which has three unique ziplines, each with dual cables to allow people to fly side-by-side. At around 200m in length you'll fly at speeds in excess of 50km/h, first between and then above the forest canopy and experience stunning views of Auckland City and Auckland’s eastern beaches. You will then embark on an easy guided nature walk, exploring native forest and learning a little more about the history of Waiheke.  

Your tour will continue on to Goldie Estate Vineyard to enjoy a wine tasting, a presentation on the unique history of this winery and a delicious buffet lunch at the Vineyard.

Mountain Biking Excursion (E9)

Timings:  8:15 am - 3:00 pm

Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfers, tour guide, mountain bike and helmet hire, mountain bike guide, beer tasting and buffet lunch with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, bottled water.

Description and requirements:  A reasonable standard of fitness is required. Please wear casual clothes suitable for biking and good walking shoes. Please bring a light rainjacket and a change of clothes. Helmets and mountain bikes will be provided. All participants need to be over the age of 5. Participants will be allocated to groups of similar ability.  

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Woodhill Forest is a great destination for adventure lovers with activities year round. For mountain biking enthusiasts there are over 50 named trails, which provide over 100 kilometres of single track riding and over 100 purpose-built, council compliant jumps and stunts including the huge 'North Shore' stunts. Woodhill Mountain Bike Park is renowned throughout New Zealand's riding community as an exceptional and unique mountain biking destination.

 

With an intimate knowledge of both Woodhill and Mountain Biking, your guides will split you into groups based on your level of ability and help you to get the most out of your ride by tailoring it specifically to the ability level and fitness of your group, while also providing friendly coaching along the way during the two hour mountain biking experience. After the exhilarating mountain biking, enjoy a beer tasting and casual lunch at Hallertau Brewery.

Auckland Sightseeing Excursion (E10)

Timings:  8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Pick up / drop off location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfers, visit to Auckland Museum, snack food, entry to Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium, lunch at a well known Chinese Restaurant with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, bottled water. 

Description and requirements:  Please wear casual clothing and comfortable shoes. 

Travelling by coach and accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, discover the city of Auckland. Highlights of the tour will include a visit to Auckland Museum, Tamaki Drive, Mission Bay, a stop at Michael Joseph Savage Memorial lookout to photograph the fabulous city and harbour views, a visit to Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium, lunch at a well known Chinese Restaurant, a drive over Auckland Harbour Bridge, a stop at Wynyard Quarter and drive through Auckland city centre.

Harbourside Bike Excursion (E12, E23, E24, E25)

Timings:  A choice of 4 start times:

Group 1 - 8:30 am - 2:30 pm (E23)

Group 2 - 8:45 am - 2:45 pm (E24)

Group 3 - 9.00 am - 3.00 pm (E25)

Group 4 - 9.15 am - 3.15 pm (E12)

Pick up location:  SkyCity Hotel Foyer

Includes:  Transfers, bike and helmet hire, biking guide, maps, trunk bag, buffet lunch with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, entry to New Zealand Maritime Museum, coffee or ice-cream at Mission Bay, bottled water.

Description and requirements:  Approximately 18 kilometres of mostly flat terrain but with a few easy climbs. Suits curious and reasonably fit travellers. Tour pace is moderate for the 3 1/2 hour bike ride at roughly 15 km/hr when biking between talk-stops. Please wear casual clothes suitable for biking  and good walking shoes. A light raincoat is recommended. Helmets and bikes will be provided. Suited to all ages and abilities, children must be able to confidently ride a bike unassisted and measure over 1.2m tall. 

 

We will ask for your height when you book your excursion to have the correct sized bike ready for you.

A fantastic bike tour experience along the harbourside.  Guests will be driven to the start point before cycling along Tamaki Drive, passing several marinas, public parklands and some stunning homes. Enjoy the fantastic views of Auckland, the Waitemata Harbour and beyond from Bastion Point, which is where former Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage (1872-1940) is buried. Cycle on to Achilles Point, which is a rocky point on the headland at the eastern end of the small sandy beach named Ladies Bay. Return to Mission Bay and then head to the Viaduct Basin for lunch followed by a tour of the Maritime Museum. Guests to make their own way back to their hotels.  

 

For this tour, children must be able to ride a bike confidently and unassisted. Parents will need to sign a waiver accordingly and parents also must supervise their children throughout the tour to ensure they are kept safe.

Children riding a bike must measure over 1.2m tall.  Infants riding in a baby seat must weigh less than 20kgs.

 

For health and safety reasons, we cannot provide training wheels or tag-alongs.

 

 Zealong Estate Tea Excursion (E13)

Timings:  8:45 am - 4:15pm

Includes:   Transfers, tour manager, tea tour, tea tasting, two course lunch (main and dessert), with wine, beer or a non alcoholic drink. 

Description and requirements:  Easy walk with no steps. Please wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes.

New Zealand is the last place you would expect to find a tea plantation. But 90 minutes south of Auckland you will find New Zealand's award winning tea plantation, Zealong Tea. A Pacific Garden of Eden, where tea grows naturally, free of chemical sprays or fertilizers. Pure air, sunshine and water, along with fertile soil gives Zealong Tea a remarkable freshness in flavour and fragrance that excites even the most jaded tea drinker. Learn the fascinating story behind Zealong, see how tea is made, experience a traditional tea ceremony, explore tea's rich history and culture and pose for a souvenir photo in traditional tea picking garb.

America's Cup Sailing and Match Race (E17, E22)

Includes:   Transfer from the SkyCity Hotel to the Viaduct Basin and return transfer, tour manager, two hour private charter sailing experience, buffet lunch with wine, beer or non alcoholic drink, bottled water.

Description and requirements:  Please wear casual clothes and flat soled shoes. Wet weather gear will be provided. All participants must be over the age of 10.

Feel the thrill of sailing authentic America’s Cup yachts in a match race. Take the helm to help steer or work on the grinders during this sailing adventure on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour.     

Relax with the wind in your face as you sit back and chat to our professional crew about the techniques, tactics and principles of sailing these boats and take the opportunity to see the contrast of natural landscapes and city skyscrapers that line the harbour from the best view in town. No sailing experience is necessary!  Your tour will conclude with lunch in the Viaduct Basin area.

Bush, Beach & Art Excursion (E18)

Timings:  9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Includes:   Transfers, tour manager, Regional Park access fee, morning tea, cafe style lunch with wine, beer or a non alcoholic drink. 

Description and requirements:  Easy beach and forest track walks. Please wear casual clothes and good walking shoes. Wet weather gear will be provided, however you may like to bring your own light rainjacket.

Only 30 kilometres from downtown Auckland is the city's largest regional park, the Waitakere Ranges. In just 30 minutes you leave behind the bustle of the city and step into the tranquility of the rainforest.   

Travel to the Arataki Visitor Centre perched high on the ridge of the Waitakere Ranges and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from the Manukau Harbour to the Pacific Ocean. Continue on to lush rainforest where you walk the easy bush tracks amongst giant fern trees and view New Zealand's famous kauri trees.    

 

Move on to experience the power of the wild and rugged west coast. Feel the black sand beneath your feet as you stroll along Piha Beach. A treat along the way will be a visit to the West Coast Gallery, a non profit, community arts venue that exhibits and sells the unique artworks of over 200 artists all residing in the West area of Auckland City. The range of art on offer includes painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, photography, glass works, mixed media, bronze, flax, local authors and CDs by Waitakere musicians. Stop for a casual lunch at Elevation Café, high in the Waitakere Ranges and enjoy views over the forest.

Auckland Harbour Cruise, Lunch and a tour of historic Devonport (E19)

Includes:   Transfers, tour manager, harbour cruise and coach tour, lunch at The Esplanade Hotel, ferry ride back to downtown Auckland.

Description and requirements:  Please wear casual clothes and flat comfortable walking shoes (limited walking).

Cruise the sparkling waters of Auckland’s beautiful Waitemata Harbour and learn about the city's best-loved landmarks with full commentary from the crew. Highlights include views of the Harbour Bridge, the city skyline, Devonport’s historic naval base, Bean Rock Lighthouse and panoramic views of Rangitoto Island. Then stop at the historic village of Devonport for lunch at The Esplanade Hotel.
Also included is a coach tour to see the highlights around Devonport. In just one hour you can stand on two volcanic cones, see the charm of historical Devonport and enjoy unsurpassed views of the Auckland region. See Maori pa sites on both Mt Victoria and North Head, and the interesting network of tunnels and forts on North Head. Please don't forget your camera.  Take the Fullers Ferry back to downtown Auckland at your leisure (15 minute ride) and make your own way back to your hotel.

Auckland Walking Excursion, Sky Tower and Lunch at Orbit Restaurant (E20)

This is a great way to discover downtown Auckland. Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and a vibrant multi-cultural place with a wide choice of quality dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities.

Visit the Sky Tower, which has stood tall as an icon of Auckland’s skyline since 1997. It’s an exciting hub of adrenaline activities, superb dining and breathtaking views.  Here you can view the city from 220 metres high above street level with panoramic 360˚ views up to 80 kilometres in every direction. Spot key landmarks, volcanoes and other historical locations within the greater Auckland area. Located in the tower is the venue for lunch - Orbit, a truly iconic New Zealand restaurant. The restaurant rotates once every hour, providing a unique experience with amazing 360-degree panoramas of the city, the Hauraki Gulf and beyond.

Villa Maria Vineyard Excursion (E21) - EXCURSION FULL

From a one-man band to a global brand in just 50 years!  In 1961, at just 21 years of age, George Fistonich leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland, and started off with just an acre of vines. Today Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff and exports wine to over 50 countries worldwide. George has spent five decades at the forefront of New Zealand's wine industry that he helped develop. As an icon of the New Zealand wine industry, Villa Maria are known for bold and industry changing moves, such as moving to 100% screw cap through to emphasis on sustainable practices in every area of the family owned company. The tour provides a history of the winery and follows the wine making process through to the bottling hall. After the tour there will be wine tasting followed by lunch at Villa Maria Restaurant.
